Agriculture is the bedrock of the economy of Bangladesh, and even though we have made tremendous strides in the five decades since independence in building up other sectors, we are still largely an agrarian nation, propped up on the backs of farmers. Their contribution must never be forgotten, and as we move into the future, we must not only keep agriculture alive, but modernize agricultural processes to bring it into the present day.
Kudos to the government for supporting the agricultural sector of this country through thick and thin. It is wonderful to hear from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that the government has introduced a system through Krishi bank to enable sharecroppers avail collateral-free loans. Furthermore, it is good to see that the government has reduced prices of fertilizer drastically from Tk90 to Tk12. Research into improving crop production has also been prioritized over the years.
