A man was killed in a clash between the supporters of two Kalma union parishad election candidates in Kishoreganj’s Astagram upazila on Tuesday night.
The 32-year-old victim, Tazul Islam, was hit with a spear during the clash that broke out between the supporters of Akhter Hossain and Chan Miah on Tuesday evening.
He was first taken to Astagram Upazila Health Complex but was later transferred to Bhagalpur Zahurul Islam Medical College Hospital as his condition worsened. He succumbed to his injuries around 8:30pm.
Locals said Tazul was a supporter of Akhter.
Police said at least 40 supporters of the two groups were injured in the clash.
A case had been filed by Akhter against 55 people in this connection, said Shamsul Alam, officer-in-charge of Astagram police station.
Our Jhenaidah correspondent said a chairman candidate was undergoing treatment at Shaikupa Upazila Complex as he was allegedly attacked by some unidentified miscreants at Kachua Bazar.
Salauddin Mamun, a chairman candidate from the ruling party Awami League, claimed that supporters of his rival candidate attacked him.
27 newly elected chairman take oath in Munshiganj
Twenty seven newly elected union parishad chairmen yesterday took oath at the office of Munshganj deputy commissioner.
They were elected during the first and second phases election from unions under Sirajdikhan and Srinagar upzilas.
