Shibir leader arrested over Rajshahi University teacher killing dies

A leader of Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing, who was arrested over the murder of a Rajshahi University teacher, has died while being treated at a hospital.
Hafizur Rahman, a Rajshahi University student, was held by police a day after English department teacher AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee’s killing.

“Hafizur had been diagnosed with cancer. He was taken to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital around 3am on Thursday after he fell ill. He died around 5am,” said Detective Branch Inspector Rezaus Sadique, who is in charge of probing the professor’s murder.

Siddiquee was murdered on the morning of Apr 23, only 50 yards away from his residence in the city’s Shalbagan while he was on his way to the university.

The murder followed a now-familiar pattern witnessed in the killings of teachers, bloggers and online activists as well as foreigners —sharp weapons being used to target the head or neck.

Police arrested Hafizur the next day and later secured a four-day remand to quiz him.
