Five cop among seven injured in police, BCL clash in CU

At least seven people, including five police personnel, received injuries during clashes between police and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of ruling Awami League, on Chittagong University campus on Thursday.

The injured cops are Mohsin Ali, sub-inspector of Hathazari police station, constable Shariful Islam, Rafiqul Islam, Anwar Hossain and Imam Hossain. University proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury said five police members and some students were injured during the clash.

The clash erupted as BCL faction pressed the university authorities to give permission to a suspended student, also one of their fellow activists, for taking the final year examinations of  Communication and Journalism department. Following the clash, the CU authorities suspended today’s final year examination of Communication and Journalism department.

The examination was scheduled to start at 10:00am. Niaz Morshed Ripan, assistant proctor of the university, said new schedule for today’s examination would be announced later. On October 18, 2016, the CU authorities suspended six BCL activists, including Md Abdullah Al Kaiser of Communication and Journalism department, for different terms for hacking a member of rival group on the campus. Campus sources said Abdullah Al Kaiser went to appear the examination in the morning but teachers denied him permission due to his suspension.

Being barred, Kaiser, along with Chhatra League activists, tried to prevent teachers. On information, police rushed in and a clash ensued as the law enforcers attempted to disperse the BCL men. Chase and counter-chase took place while Chhatra League activists pelted brickbats, prompting police to charge batons. Later, the BCL men took position in front of the main entrance around noon and shut the entrance. Police chased them again and fired teargas shells in retaliation to brickbats being pelted by the Chhatra League activists.

Panic gripped teachers and students on the campus and surrounding areas due to the clash. Additional law enforcers have been deployed on the campus to avert further clashes. Meanwhile, Central Chhatra League this afternoon suspended two of its members who were involved in the clash, BCL central committee office secretary Delowar Hossain Shahajada told New Age. The suspended BCL members are Abdullah Al Kaiser, assistant secretary of CU unit and its deputy office secretary Mizanur Rahman, he added.
