BNP candidate Sakku wins Comilla city polls

Voting was suspended at two stations over irregularities.

BNP-blessed mayoral aspirant Monirul Haque Sakku has unofficially won the election to Comilla City Corporation.
Officials started counting the ballots after voting had ended at 4pm on Thursday.
Voters cast their ballots amid tight security measures taken for the election that began at 8am. Voting was, however, suspended at two centres over irregularities.
The city corporation was scheduled to go to the polls on December 20 last year, but legal complexities over a boundary demarcation delayed it.
On the other hand, a tense situation has been prevailing in the area as law enforcers have cordoned off a suspected militant hideout at south Bagmara village in Kotbari of Comilla sadar south upazila since Wednesday.
However, the law enforces did not go for any operation during the polls as the Election Commission asked them to delay their raid on the den until the election was over.
