The CEC had been implementing the agenda of a particular political party.
Chittagong City unit BNP President Dr Shahadat Hossain has alleged that the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) gave priority to ruling Awami League leaders while distributing smart national ID cards in the port city.
“The CEC lost his neutrality by giving priority to the ruling party while distributing smart NID cards in Chittagong,” said the BNP leader in a statement issued on Tuesday.
The CEC had been implementing the agenda of a particular political party, the statement added.
CEC KM Nurul Huda during his maiden official visit to Chittagong on Monday distributed the smart NID cards among distinguished personalities.
But the leaders of a big political party were neglected as they were not invited to the ceremony, alleged the Chittagong City BNP President.
“People are beginning to doubt as to how the CEC will conduct the much-awaited general election with neutrality and impartiality. The CEC will not be able to conduct elections in a free, fair and impartial manner,” said Dr Shahadat.
Chittagong Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, former mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, eminent academic and sociologist Dr Anupam Sen, prominent journalist and poet Abul Momen and Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCCI) President Mahbubul Alam received the smart NID cards from the CEC.
