The Election Commission has warned the Comilla mayoral candidates of ruling Awami League and BNP not to violate electoral codes.
The media has reported that Awami League-nominated Anjum Sultana Shima and BNP’s Monirul Haque Sakku, the former mayor, had started campaigning in the city flanked by party supporters though it was prohibited by law.
The formal campaigns for the second Comilla City Corporation election start Wednesday.
It is the first election schedule announced by the KM Nurul Huda-led EC. The election will be held on March 30. The last date to withdraw nominations is Tuesday.
On Saturday evening, Returning Officer Rakib Uddin Mandal sent separate letters to the popular candidates urging them to cooperate with the EC and help conduct a fair election.
Rakib, also the Comilla regional election officer, said the candidates in no way could start campaigns before the set date. “This is why they have been warned,” he said.
