A young model from Chittagong has committed suicide allegedly over marital dispute.
Jacqueline Mithila was found hanging from the roof of her residence in Chittagong on February 3, port police OC Mainul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday.
Her body was handed over to her family after an autopsy the same day.
Mithila’s father Swapan Shil, a barbar from Feni, said his daughter’s name was Joya Shil, port police’s Sub-Inspector Moinuddin said.
Swapan has accused seven people, including Mithila’s husband Utpal Roy and his mother, for driving his daughter to take her life.
SI Moinuddin said they had found Mithila’s mobile phone and a piece of paper lying near her body. “The paper read: ‘I married out of love. He [Utpal] stopped loving me after marriage.’”
The phone could not be unlocked yet, he added.
Utpal hails from Chittagong’s Fatikchhari and works at Matiranga agriculture office, SI Moinuddin said, quoting Mithila’s father.
Swapan Shil said Utpal and his daughter had a seven-year affair and that they had gotten married last November at court. He alleged Utpal’s family kept him away from seeing his daughter after the marriage.
Two of Mithila’s Facebook posts before her death indicated that she was in a fragile emotional state.
In a status posted on January 30 at 11:49pm, she wrote she was going to take her life on January 31 and clarified that her decision was not influenced by anyone.
Roughly translated, the status in Bangla reads: “I will commit suicide tomorrow. No-one has dumped me, nor did I. But I will commit suicide.”
Couple of days before taking her life, she wrote on January 31 at 7:28pm that she was gradually nearing her end.
