BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today expressed his apprehension that the new election commission may be constituted as per the will of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“Many people are saying that the election commission will be formed in accordance with Prime Minister Hasina’s instruction. There are people in the search committee who are directly involved with the ruling party and they are enjoying government benefits,” he said.
Fakhrul was addressing a programme organised by BNP-led 20-party’s component, Jatiya Ganatrantrik Party (JAGPA) Dhaka city unit at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity this noon.
“Despite this [the apprehension], we have accepted the search committee and submitted names to it as we want to see democracy in a stable position,” he said.
Fakhrul, however, hoped that President Abdul Hamid would take the right initiative so that people’s aspirations are reflected in formation of the next Election Commission.
He said, “Our demand is not only formation of an impartial election commission, but also holding the next general election under a neutral poll-time national government.”
Criticising the government for attacks on journalists, the BNP leader said, “It is not Awami League rather uniformed people are running the country.”
