Two more cases, including a defamation suit, were filed against the Daily Observer editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury with two separate courts in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Ruling Awami League lawmaker Enamul Haque from Rajshahi-4 constituency filed the cases against Iqbal Sobhan, also the prime minister’s media affairs adviser. Journalist Mamunur Rashid of the daily has been made another accused in the cases.
One case was filed with the court of metropolitan magistrate Sharafuzzaman Ansari who recorded the statement of the plaintiff and set February 2 for passing order. Another case of defamation worth of Tk 100 crore was filed with fifth sub-district judge court.
The judge, Monwara Begum, set February 7 for hearing over acceptability of the case. According to the case statement, the daily on January 23 published a report titled ‘Police await PM’s order to launch crackdown on drug lords’ implicating the plaintiff and maligning his image as well. Earlier, AL lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari from Feni-2 constituency filed another defamation case worth of Tk 10 crore against the PM’s adviser.
