Suranjit for prompt disposal of sensational cases

Minister without portfolio Suranjit Sengupta on Wednesday called for the quick disposal of sensational cases, including that of war criminals, Aug 21 grenade attack, 10-truck arms haul and the murder of four national leaders.

“We want quick disposal of the sensational cases for maintaining the constitutional and democratic processes in the country,” he told a discussion.
Bangabandu Academy organised the discussion, titled ‘Speedy Trial of War Criminals, Construction of Padma Bridge and Politics of Opposition’, at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) with Lion Mujibur Rahman, Adviser of the Academy, in the chair.
Haji Selim, joint general secretary of Dhaka city unit of Awami League, AL leaders Mozaffar Hossain Paltu and Ahmed Hossain, among others, addressed the discussion.
Speaking at the programme, Suranjit urged the government to take effecting steps for bringing back the fugitive convicts of the Bangabandhu murder case from abroad for executing the verdict of the case.
Suranjit also called upon the Foreign Ministry to take necessary diplomatic initiatives in this regard.
Defending the Prime Minister’s proposal on all-party ‘small cabinet’, he urged BNP to join the all-party interim government for participating in the national election.
“We believed in democracy and constitution, and the next general election will be held as per the constitutional provision. There’s no scope of having non-party government in democracy. The philosophy of democracy is forming government with political parties,” he said.
Terming the Election Commission strong, Suranjit said there were instances that the ruling party-backed candidates got defeated in the local government and parliamentary elections held during the tenure of the present government.
