Sheikh Hasina meets Elias Ali's wife (video)

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina has met Tahsina Rushdir, the wife of missing BNP leader M Elias Ali, at her official residence Ganabhaban.

Rushdir had reached the Ganabhaban past 5pm on Wednesday to meet the prime minister in connection with her missing husband, who is traceless for the last 15 days.

Her two sons–Akbar Elias (18) and Labib Shara (16), and eight-year-old daughter Syena Nawal accompanied her during the visit.

Emerging from the meeting, a pale-looking Luna said the PM assured her that she would take every possible measure to trace and rescue Elias Ali.

“I am hopeful,” Luna said, seeking blessings from all.

The premier requested Luna to give all information to the law-enforcement agencies “trying relentlessly” to find Elias.

Luna along with her two sons—Abrar Elias and Labib Elias, daughter Sayara Nawal, and two siblings and an aide of Elias Ali, entered the Ganobhaban at about 5:00pm. The PM talked to them in private for nearly 35 minutes, according to Ganobhaban insiders.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Mahbubul Haq Shakil, special assistant to the PM, said Elias’ wife sought the government’s help in rescuing her missing husband and Hasina told her about the government measures in this regard.

“Law enforcers have been relentlessly trying to trace the missing BNP leader, but the family needs to provide them with information, if they have any, to help expedite the process of locating Elias Ali,” Shakil said, quoting Hasina.

The PM assured that all-out steps have been taken to find out Elias. Luna told the prime minister that she had gone to meet the premier with a firm belief that she would understand their pain as she also lost her near and dear ones, said Shakil.

One of the members of the delegation said the PM inquired about the examination of Elias’ eldest son Abrar who was supposed to sit for the ongoing Higher Secondary Certificate examinations. She also hugged them and expressed her deep sympathy for the grief-stricken family members.

Earlier on Monday, during a press briefing at her Banani residence, Luna said, “I earnestly request the prime minister to give us an opportunity to meet her.”

She said if her husband had been detained for interrogation, the family should have been informed of it.

Claiming that she had come to know about different things through newspapers, Luna said, “If there is any condition, please let us know. We want him back alive under any conditions.”

BNP Organising Secretary Ilias Ali, 51, also a former lawmaker from Sylhet, and his driver Ansar Ali went missing from the capital's Banani area around midnight on April 17.

“We are living in uncertainty and feeling insecure. I can't even dare to send my daughter to school. I can't describe how worried I am about them [the children],” said Ilias' wife at the press briefing.

Elias, one of the organising secretaries of BNP and a former MP from Sylhet, and his driver went missing in the early hours of Apr 18. His car was found abandoned in the capital's Mohakhali area.

BNP has been alleging that the 'government agencies picked him up'. The government has, however, been refuting the allegation, saying that it was a 'drama staged by the BNP'.

The Rapid Action Battalion and police have raided several place at Pubail in Gazipur and Dhaka in search of Elias, but to no avail.
