Downpour paralyses life in port city

Incessant rain for the last two days since Saturday submerged many areas in the port city with knee-deep water, causing sufferings to commuters, especially the office-goers and students.

Different areas including Chawkbazar, Agrabad, Halishahar, Kapasgola, Shulak Bahar, Halisahar and Bahaddarhat -went under water.

People in these areas suffered for hours due to water-logging.

The Chittagong divisional Met Office recorded 205.22 millimeters of rainfall till Sunday morning.

Secretary of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Syed Farhad Uddin Ahmed said unloading of bulk cargoes carrying food grains and cement clinker remained suspended due to heavy shower.

As the sea remained rough, the lighter ships could not go to the outer anchorage to load and unload goods.

Movement of vehicles on the streets becomes difficult and a very few rickshaws are plying the streets.

Most commuters cannot hire rickshaws to reach their destinations and are compelled to wade through the filthy water overflowing from roadside drains.
