Seven killed in road crashes in Rajshahi, Habiganj

Seven people were killed and eight others injured in separate road accidents in Rajshahi and Habiganj districts this (Wednesday) morning.

In Rajshahi, four people were killed and eight others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a human-hauler carrying newspapers in Puthia upazila in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Jahurul Islam, 30, driver of the human-hauler and a resident of Bhuagati in Tangail district, Abu Bakkar, 70, of Baraigram village in Natore, Ohidul Islam, 35, and Ripon, 30, of Kazipara in Magura district.

Highway police and local sources said the Natore-bound sand-laden truck collided head-on with the human-hauler at about 7 am after it was chased by a traffic police, killing Jahurul on the spot and injuring 11 others.

Three of the injured succumbed to their injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH).

Locals said the accident occurred when havildar Aminul Islam of traffic police chased the truck allegedly for toll collection. They put barricade on Dhaka-Rajshahi highway for two hours from 7:30 am demanding punishment of the traffic cop. Later, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.

The injured were admitted to the RMCH and Puthia Upazila Health Complex. The bodies were sent to hospital morgue for autopsy. Officer-in-charge of Puthia Police Station Sheikh Atiar Rahman confirmed the accident, denying the allegation of toll collection against the traffic policeman.

In Habiganj, at least three brick field workers were killed as a truck rammed them down at Mirpur on Dhaka-Sylhet highway in Bahubal upazila this (Wednesday) morning.

The deceased were identified as Shamsu Mia, Lal Mia and Safar Ali of Charigaon Hafizpur village of the upazila. They were workers of New Sagar Brick Field of the area.

Local sources said the Dhaka-bound stone-loaded truck rammed the workers down at about 6am after its driver lost control over the steering while they were standing beside the highway, leaving them dead on the spot.

On information, police recovered the bodies and sent those to hospital morgue for autopsy. Police seized the truck but its driver managed to flee the scene.

A case was filed.
