Bengali Pranab India President
Pranab Mukherjee is the first-ever Bengali to become President of India, after winning the presidential elections by a landslide margin.
Of the 733 valid votes of MPs counted, Mukherjee had got 527 with a value of 373,116 and his only rival PA Sangma bagged 206 votes with a value of 145,848, according to NDTV.
The official result was announced at 5pm Bangladesh time on the website of Press Trust of India (PTI).
The ruling Congress party named Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee as its nominee for President on Jun 15 after a week of political turmoil that exposed the fragility of a coalition government that has lurched between crises as the economy sputters.
Since the morning, Mukherjee's supporters continued dancing ecstatically outside their leader's house as sweets were being distributed and bands played popular tunes to celebrate the occasion.
Referring to Mukherjee's years of experience, Delhi Chief Minister and Congress leader Sheila Dikshit remarked, "I think he will be a wise president, not being a political president or an administrative president."
Mukherjee first became an MP 43 years ago, a minister 39 years ago. His first stint as Finance Minister of India began exactly 30 years ago. He has been a minister under every Congress Prime Minister in the last 40 years.
He is acknowledged across political parties as one of the best Parliamentarians -- several generations of MPs have not seen Parliament without him in it. NDTV praised Mukherjee in one of their report before the official announcement came.
"Being a Congressman is in his blood. His father was a Congressman and he himself has been that party's troubleshooter for years, privy to every nitty gritty, planning every move. And yet he has seen his days of rebellion -- a brief spell some 28 years ago, when he was out in the cold and even formed his own party," the NDTV report said.
After studying politics, history and law in Calcutta University, he worked as a teacher, a journalist and a lawyer before joining politics in 1969; he first began in Rajya Sabha, and has since held many important portfolios including only the topmost ones like foreign, home and defence in the last 30 years.
He has also been on the board of governors at the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, and was rated one of the best finance ministers in the world by Euromoney magazine in 1984.
He is married to Suvra and has two sons - Abhijit and Indrajit -- and a daughter - Sharmisthha, who is a Kathak dancer. Abhijit Mukherjee is a Congress MLA in West Bengal.
The new president will be administered the oath of office by the Chief Justice of India on July 25.
