Recruitment of 650 NU staff challenged
The High Court on Monday questioned the legality of recruitment of 650 National University (NU) staff made between 1992 and 2001.

The court issued a rule upon the NU authorities to explain in three weeks why appointment of the 650 officials and staffs including two teachers should not be declared illegal.
An HC bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Abu Jafar Siddiqui came up with the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by former BNP lawmaker AKM Fazlul Haque Milon.
Filed as public interest litigation, the petition says that 650 teachers, officials and staffs were appointed at the NU between 1992 and 2001without any circular or the selection board’s recommendation.
Alleging that the appointments did not comply with NU rules and regulations, Milon prayed to the court to declare the appointments illegal.
Eight high officials of the government including Education Secretary Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Dr A K Azad Chowdhury and NU vice-chancellor, registrar and treasurer have been made respondents to the rule.
