On May 17, 1981 Sheikh Hasina returned to her motherland after about six years in exile following assassination of her father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members on August 15, 1975.
Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana, Bangabandhu’s two daughters, survived from the assassination as they were in Germany at that time.
Sheikh Hasina was elected president of Bangladesh Awami League in her absence in the national council of the party on February 14-16 in 1981.
